General Transcript:

  • I’m not sure who this is for…
    • if you’re listening to this, maybe you need a little encouragement, maybe a lot
    • I’m not sure who this episode is for, if no one else it’s for me
  • Story of my friend
    • we both are facing storms in our lives
    • But from meeting with her, I left so inspired by her heart
    • I wrote in my journal
      • I’m so encouraged. This life and it’s trials and tribulations are temporary. I instead of being so me-focused, need to focus on the ways God is using this.
        • James 1:3-4
        • Count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have it’s perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete lacking nothing.
    • So, I hear sermons like this sometimes and I get nervous. It starts making me worry about the storms that may be headed my way. And that’s not what I want to do here. Just so you know… it’s actually the opposite. Because I think worry steals so much of what God has for us.
  • My friend’s storm has to do with her marriage. And it feels very painful in the moment.
  • As I’ve been praying for her since I continue to be inspired by her heart that she is having during this incredibly painful storm.
  • Marriage difficulties are extremely painful
    • I think it’s some of the worst pain because it’s your heart,
      • it even feels like its your value
      • its feels like its your safety
      • its feels like its who you are
      • it can feel all consuming
    • But you’ve heard over and over again on this show that God can utterly redeem the messes of our marriages
  • You may be in the midst of the hardest season of your life
    • You may be faced with unbelievable circumstances
    • I want you to know, that God is looking at your heart in the midst
      • see when we’re in storms it’s clear where we’re putting our safety
        • and the world is not trustworthy like our God is trustworthy
    • Its all about your heart, it’s all about your posture towards Him
    • The way you keep your heart fixed on His in the midst of this storm… That is what He is looking for
    • He’s looking for your faith
  • In the book Sacred Marriage, the book that says “what if marriage is to make us holy, not happy”
    • Gary Thomas also says “God didn’t design marriage to compete with God but to point is to God”
  • Don’t worry
    • a marital storm
      • then there’s the added anguish of anxiety/worry/concern/fretting
      • I remember the knot in my stomach during those years of marital discord
    • But what does Jesus say?
      • “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matt 6:34
      • Jesus wants us to live just for today
      • [read Matt 6:25-34]
    • Focus on just today
    • because if you’re trying to focus on the future or even on the past, you don’t have the energy to do what God is asking you to do today
    • you can’t.
    • you’re too distracted.
      • I think God hates worry
      • worry is distracting
      • it keeps us from thinking about things properly
      • it keeps us paralyzed in fear
      • “My life has been full of many terrible misfortunes, most of which never happened” Michel de Montaigne
      • Stop Worrying and Start Living
      • God doesn’t want your storm to compound with worry
    • That’s all God gives us, today. not yesterday. not even tomorrow. Just right now, today. Focus on today. What is God asking of you today, even right now?
      • maybe it’s to repent of the worry you’ve given you’re marital problems.
      • maybe it’s to repent of the lack of faith you’ve had in God’s provision and plan for your life
    • Remember His mercies are new every morning. He has given you mercy for today. for right now. just ask for it and believe you have received his grace for today.
    • Whatever your situation, you can follow Jesus just for today.
  • So if you’re going through it…I want to stand here also in the midst of my storm and tell you there’s hope
    • and tell you God is with you
    • He has not left you
    • He is with you in the midst of your storm and there is a purpose and a reason for it
    • God knows much more than we do and we will find out how this matters in the long run
      • somehow someway God has a plan and a purpose
  • ‘You can do this’ story
    • I was in a very vulnerable space with a friend not long ago, having to be faced with some significant challenges and I asked her quite sincerely ‘how am I going to be able to do this’ and she answered ‘I don’t know’. I think she was giving war to the difficulty of the situation and I appreciate that.
    • But I’m here as a friend holding your hand, looking into your eyes and I’m here to tell you ‘somehow you can’
    • You are not left alone. God is with you in this. He has not left your side. Don’t lose hope. You will make it through.
    • I am in a season of suffering too and I want you to know we can make it. We are not here by ourselves, Jesus himself co labors with us, the great cloud of witnesses are cheering is on, the angels rejoice at our turning to God
    • We have the hope of eternity moments away. Don’t give up. Don’t lose hope. Keep fighting. Keeping deriving. Keep loving. Keep following God with everything.
  • God is a God of hope
    • and you can have hope in the midst of your storm
    • today
    • right now
    • you can have hope in the midst of your storm
