Married 42 Years, Living Like Roommates – Until Everything Changed | Carol’s Story

Can you imagine being married for 42 years and reaching a point where you can’t even stand being in the same room as your spouse?

That’s exactly where Carol found herself.

After more than four decades of marriage, raising four children, welcoming nine grandchildren, and dedicating much of their lives to Christian ministry, Carol and her husband had become more like roommates than husband and wife.

The joy was gone. The intimacy had nearly disappeared. And Carol found herself doing everything she could to avoid spending time with her husband.

She was determined not to get divorced, but she also couldn’t imagine how things would ever get better.

She had lost hope that her marriage could change.

In this week’s episode of Delight Your Marriage, Belah Rose sits down with Carol, a recent DYM graduate, to hear her remarkable story of healing, forgiveness, and marriage transformation.

Carol openly shares some of the painful experiences that shaped her marriage, including a devastating letter from her father that affected her relationships with both her husband and God for years.

But what makes her story so encouraging is what happened when she began doing the work to change her own heart.

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • How a marriage of 42 years went from emotional disconnection and resentment to renewed love and intimacy.
  • Why years of hurt and unforgiveness kept Carol from experiencing the marriage she desired.
  • The powerful forgiveness exercise that helped break down walls between Carol and her husband.
  • How rebuilding physical intimacy began changing their emotional connection.
  • Why Carol believes it’s never too late for God to transform a marriage.

One of the most powerful moments in the conversation comes when Carol admits:

“I was the stronghold.”

Instead of continuing to focus on everything her husband needed to change, she began allowing God to work on her own heart.

And what happened next was something she hadn’t believed was possible.

Carol now looks forward to the years ahead with her husband. She’s rediscovering the joy of being married and growing closer to him emotionally, spiritually, and physically.

Her story is such a beautiful reminder that no matter how many years you’ve been married or how disconnected you’ve become, God can still do something new.

Whether you’ve been married for five years, 20 years, or more than 40 years, we believe this episode will encourage you.

And be sure to listen to the end, where Carol shares a heartfelt prayer for the wife who may be struggling in the same place she once was.

If you’re struggling in your own marriage, we’d love to walk alongside you.

At Delight Your Marriage, we’ve seen God transform marriages even when only one spouse begins making changes. While we encourage husbands to take the first step, either spouse can begin the journey toward healing and connection.

If you’re ready to see what’s possible for your marriage, we’d love to help you take that next step.

PPPS – Here is a another quote from a recent graduate: “Even beyond receiving the tools to heal my marriage, The greatest celebration has been experiencing the DYM community. Getting to know other men who take responsibility.  Men who don’t complain about their situation, even though they may lament in healthy ways from time to time, but instead seek ways that they can be the husbands that their wives need.  Who show up, time after time, week after week, lesson after lesson, and courageously share vulnerability in a demonstration of strength.  That’s exhilarating, to be in that community, where I was able to see others with similar challenges due to their transparency, but also similar lessons to learn even if the particulars are different. Getting to receive the wisdom that Belah pours out and the curriculum she’s put together.  How she remains enthusiastic and encouraging, despite the crushing brokenness of the families around her, and yet remains indefatigable and focused.  Her remarkable ability to articulate complex issues and identify root causes of intricate problems.  Her coursework is brilliant, the way the accountability calls are set up where we see similar challenges, and therefore similar solutions, the thoughtful online courses designed to be flexible to men with busy lives and multiple competing priorities, yet the coaching calls address specific matters, and the daily LTP’s with the structure to help the Holy Spirit to transform my perspectives.”

Married 42 Years, Living Like Roommates – Until Everything Changed | Carol’s Story

After 42 years of marriage, Carol could barely stand being in the same room as her husband.

They had raised four children, welcomed nine grandchildren, and dedicated much of their lives to Christian ministry. But behind closed doors, their marriage had become a painful, disconnected relationship.

They weren’t experiencing the closeness they once shared. Their physical intimacy had nearly disappeared, and Carol found herself looking for excuses to spend time away from her husband.

She was determined not to get divorced, but she had lost hope that her marriage could ever be different.

In this episode of Delight Your Marriage, Belah Rose sits down with Carol, a recent DYM graduate, to share her personal testimony of marriage restoration, forgiveness, renewed intimacy, and God’s transforming work after more than four decades of marriage.

Carol’s story is a reminder that no matter how long you’ve been married or how disconnected you’ve become, meaningful change is still possible.

When 42 Years of Marriage Feels Like Living With a Roommate

Carol and her husband had once been deeply in love. But over the years, painful experiences, resentment, and emotional distance slowly changed their relationship.

Even after moving from California to Alabama and hoping a less stressful lifestyle would improve things, their marriage continued to deteriorate.

Carol explains that their physical intimacy had become almost nonexistent. Their connection was largely limited to a morning kiss and a goodnight kiss.

She had even asked her husband to stop calling her “babe.”

What made the situation especially difficult was that Carol and her husband were involved in ministry. They were helping others while privately struggling in their own marriage.

Carol felt isolated, embarrassed, and unsure where to turn for help.

How Unresolved Hurt and Unforgiveness Affected Their Marriage

One of the most emotional parts of Carol’s testimony involves a letter she received from her father after his death.

Her father, a pastor, had written words that left her deeply wounded. Because he had already passed away, Carol never had the opportunity to discuss those words with him or seek reconciliation.

That pain influenced not only how she viewed herself and her relationship with God, but also how she viewed her husband.

Carol began focusing more and more on her husband’s weaknesses and the things that frustrated her about their marriage.

Over time, bitterness and unforgiveness became significant barriers to emotional connection.

Through DYM’s coaching process, Carol began recognizing how important forgiveness was, including forgiving her father and addressing the resentment she had carried toward her husband.

The Forgiveness Exercise That Changed Their Relationship

Carol and her husband entered Delight Your Marriage after friends who were experiencing positive changes encouraged them to consider the program.

Although they participated during the same period, Carol explains that DYM’s approach was different from the marriage counseling they had previously experienced.

Rather than working through their disagreements together in the same group, the husbands and wives received coaching separately.

Each spouse focused on personal growth, biblical principles, and taking responsibility for their own part in the relationship.

One of the first major breakthroughs came during a forgiveness exercise.

Carol was reluctant to apologize to her husband. She had spent years remembering painful experiences and believed she had many reasons to feel hurt.

But when she began apologizing, something unexpected happened.

Her husband started asking for forgiveness for many of the very experiences that had hurt her most deeply.

That moment became an important turning point in rebuilding their marriage.

Rebuilding Emotional, Spiritual, and Physical Intimacy

As Carol and her husband continued their coaching journey, they began rebuilding their marriage through small, intentional changes.

Her husband started joining her on morning walks, turning what had previously been time alone into an opportunity to connect.

They began enjoying conversations again, showing each other kindness, and finding ways to spend meaningful time together.

Their spiritual connection also deepened as they began praying together more frequently and talking about their relationship with God.

But one of the biggest steps for Carol involved restoring physical intimacy.

After years of emotional distance, she had become uncomfortable even changing clothes in front of her husband.

During the program, Belah challenged her to consider the importance of physical intimacy in a connected marriage.

Carol admits that taking this step required courage, vulnerability, and a willingness to move beyond her comfort zone.

As their physical intimacy was restored, Carol noticed changes in their emotional connection and in her husband’s attitude and behavior.

For Carol, restoring intimacy became an important part of experiencing a more loving, connected marriage.

“I Was the Stronghold” – A Powerful Moment of Self-Reflection

One of the most meaningful moments in the interview comes when Carol reflects on the resentment she had carried for so many years.

She acknowledges that she had been holding on to bitterness and unforgiveness that affected the way she treated her husband.

Instead of continuing to focus only on what her husband needed to change, Carol began looking honestly at her own heart.

She realized that she couldn’t control her husband’s actions, but she could choose how she responded, how she forgave, and how she pursued her relationship with God.

Her transformation didn’t happen through one dramatic moment. It developed through daily habits, accountability, prayer, forgiveness, and a willingness to practice new ways of loving her husband.

Over time, the admiration and encouragement that once felt unnatural began to come from her heart.

It’s Never Too Late for Marriage Restoration

Carol wants other husbands and wives, especially those who have been married for decades, to know that their story isn’t over.

She shares that being in her 60s doesn’t mean she has to stop growing, pursuing intimacy, or experiencing joy in her marriage.

Today, Carol and her husband are finding new ways to enjoy life together.

Whether they’re taking walks, praying together, having conversations, or playing golf, Carol describes a very different relationship from the one they had before.

She’s also noticed that the changes in her marriage have influenced her relationships with others, allowing her to feel more open and loving toward people in her church community.

At the end of the episode, Carol offers a heartfelt prayer for women who feel hopeless, disconnected, or trapped in the same painful place she once experienced.

Her message is one of faith, courage, and hope: God isn’t finished with your story.
